May 21, 2014. Welcoming back some old friends

A four-person delegation from the University of St. Thomas, Houston, led by board member Mr. Don J. Wang, president Dr. Ivany and chair of the Center for International Studies Dr. Stockton, and accompanied by representative Chen Yi-Shun from the International and Cross-Strait Division of the Ministry of Education, visited CNU at 3.00 p.m. on May 25, 2014.

In addition to being a member of the board of trustees at the University of St. Thomas, Mr. Don J. Wang is also an honorary committee member of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Houston District Overseas Compatriot Affairs Commission, and has devoted himself tirelessly to the work of this commission for many years.

A delegation from the University of St. Thomas first visited CNU in 2011, thus initiating an exchange relationship which has continued to grow and flourish.

In January of this year, Dr. Stockton again led a group of 14 students in a visit to our campus. While visiting CNU’s Center for Arts and Culture, this group of students who had never previously visited Taiwan viewed an exhibition of handcrafted works by artists who have been certified as “The Home of Taiwan Handicrafts,” including ceramics, bamboo products, gold and silverware, woven and died fabrics, etc.. The students showed great interest in these exhibits, and were especially enthusiastic to learn about the traditional Taiwanese custom of serving and enjoying tea, joining in the activity with great gusto.

In addition, the students toured the cradle of Taiwan’s traditional culture, Tainan city. They were accompanied by students from CNU’s Department of Applied English, who served as “guardian angels,” explaining the history and significance of the sites visited. In the course of the tour, the group visited the National Museum of Taiwan Literature, Fort Zeelandia, Fort Provintia, the Anping Sword Lions, and Da Tong Night Market, as well as tasting examples of Tainan’s renowned snack food, including shrimp rolls and bean jelly pudding.

Through this activity, the visiting American college students were able to personally experience Taiwan’s rich history and gourmet delights, leaving an indelible impression in their minds.

This third visit by a delegation from the University of St. Thomas was augmented by the presence of a member of the board and the university president, clearly demonstrating the importance UST places on its exchange relationship with Chia Nan University.

In a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, the two sides completed the signing of a MOU, thus officially creating a sister university relationship. Both schools are now engaged in enthusiastic discussions on the implementation of specific exchange activities, including attendance by CNU students at a summer camp or convention at UST, teacher exchanges, lectures or combined research plans, and extended visits by exchange students to take courses at the partner university.
